Everything I needed to know I learned from vacationing…

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Keep things simple. Prepare for anything. One bathroom is not enough. Go on recommendations (from people you trust). Expect the unexpected. Keep everyone’s personality in mind. Pack snacks (people that are fed are happy). Travel in small groups. Leave time to do absolutely nothing. Write a list. Check it twice. Do a little research ahead of time. Remain flexible. Keep expectations realistic (you will not lay out with young children around). Get organized before you go, there is nothing like coming home to a clean house. Let your husband pack nothing except the car.

As you read this I am on vacation. I hope I have taken my own advice. We tend to return to the same place year after year. Matt and I are like that – we like traditions. So I am hoping that right now we are on a beach – our feet in the sand (because our sons buried them), sipping on something refreshing – completely relaxed because we have made it our business not to be anywhere at any certain time – now that is what I call vacation!

See you soon! -Lisa

Must Wait 30 Minutes Before Swimming

Since the age of four, many weeks of summer consisted of me and my sister spending time “At the Lake”. That’s where my grandparents lived in NJ. It was an hour from our house, but worlds away. The “lake” is seven miles long in a valley with roads spiraling above creating beautiful scenery. There are 8 beaches for families to enjoy. My Nan’s beach was Beach 3. We would head down to the beach around 10:00 am, swim for a few hours, and then have lunch. My lunch as a child was peanut butter and jelly, a plum and water from the coolest water fountain that was on the beach made out of rocks. As I finished my sandwich I waited patiently to hear the wonderful bells of the Ice Cream Truck. A screwball push-up pop would be my choice. What’s better then ice cream with a gumball at the end? We would then have to wait 30 minutes before being back allowed in the water, for fear of the dreaded stomach ache that might lead us to drown.

I have wonderful memories of the lake, and now my children can enjoy it. Their grandparents now live there, along with ethanlake1their great-grandfather. We have the luxury of not only enjoying the beach, but a boat too with tubing and knee boarding (yes, I knee board!).  We will be heading down on Thursday to enjoy a long weekend of summer fun. Happy 4th everyone.

Road Tripping

Monday, June 29th, 2009

I love traveling.  I love packing and planning, hanging out at the airport, feeling completely lost talking to cab drivers that don’t speak English, wading in crystal blue waters.  I love not caring what day it is or what time it is.   Oh how I miss traveling.  Don’t get me wrong, I know we can certainly travel with the kiddos.  Angelina and Brad do it all the time so certainly we can do it, too.  However, between tough work schedules and trying to be money smart, we’ve opted to redefine our idea of a vacation.

Just like our idea of dating or me time has been redefined, vacationing has taken on a new meaning with kids.  We hope to take our first family vacation, airplane and all, next year.  In the mean time, we’re indulging our love of road trips.

Our favorite road trip to date was a one day venture to NYC.  I had a business meeting but it only took an hour, so afterwards we spent the day walking around the Big Apple.  We did drive back the same night but it still felt like we’d been away from home for a few days; it was an amazing way to recharge.  More importantly, I realized vacationing is about exposing our kiddos to new and different environments, people and experiences.  While NYC is only a short drive away, it was a whole new world for Dessa.

This summer we’ll be going back down to New Jersey and NYC.  If my hubby has his way, we’ll even travel north to Maine.  And most definitely we’ll take  a trip or two to Mystic and Boston.  We’d like to plan road trips to a few places neither my husband nor I have been to so I’d love to get some suggestions for family friendly destinations two to three hours away.  What are your favorite nearby road trips?
