The Nap Nanny, a portable recliner designed for babies to sleep, relax and play, has issued a voluntary recall. Click here to read the official press release issued by The Nap Nanny’s parent company (Baby Matters, LLC) in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The 30,000 Nap Nannys subject to the recall were sold at toy and children’s retail stores nationwide and online from January 2009 through July 2010.

If you own a Nap Nanny, purchased before August 15, 2009, please follow this link to register for an $80 coupon valid towards the purchase of a new Nap Nanny with free shipping. These “first generation” Nap Nannys can be identified by the absence Velcro straps inside the cover securing the cover to the foam base.

If you’re Nap Nanny was purchased after August 15, 2009, the company is asking families to stop use of their Nap Nanny until they view their informational video explaining the proper use of their product along with information on the hazards of improper use.

We want to assure our customers the Nap Nannys we have in stock at Bellani are part of the ones produced after August 15, 2009 and which have the additional safety feature of Velcro straps for securing the outer cover to the inner foam base. We encourage anyone with a Nap Nanny or considering purchasing one, to use the product in the manner suggested by the manufacturer. Parents should always avoid use of the Nap Nanny anywhere other than the floor. The Nap Nanny is not designed to be used inside of other baby equipment (cribs, play yards, etc.). Bellani will continue to proudly sell the Nap Nanny and hope to allow other families to enjoy the many benefits of this great product.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is once again urging all parents and caregivers to immediately stop using convertible “close-sleeper/bedside sleeper” bassinets manufactured by Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa.

CPSC has learned of two additional infant deaths since the August 2008 safety alert and recall announcements that notified consumers of two infants who had strangled in their Simplicity bassinets. To date, CPSC is aware of four infants who have died in the close-sleeper bassinets.

CPSC learned that in September 2008, a two-month old girl in Demorest, Ga. suffocated when she rolled into the adjustable fabric siding of the bassinet, pressing her face into a “pocket” which formed near the Velcro fasteners. In another incident in January 2009, a six-month old girl in Fort Worth, Texas appears to have been fatally entrapped in the bassinet’s bar opening created when the Velcro fasteners were not secured. An investigation into this infant’s death is ongoing.

In addition, CPSC has received two separate reports involving a 10-week old and a 3-month old whose heads became entrapped between the lower bassinet bar and the mattress support. The infants were freed by their caregivers without injury.

The Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets, including bassinets with the Graco logo and “Winnie the Pooh” motif licensed by Disney Consumer Products, contain metal bars that are covered by an adjustable fabric flap.

This fabric flap is secured by Velcro fasteners, which are intended to be partially removed when the bassinet is converted into the bedside/close-sleeper mode. If the Velcro fasteners are not properly re-secured when the fabric flap is adjusted, or if the consumer entirely removes the fabric flap exposing the metal bars, an infant can slip through the opening between the lower metal bar and the mattress support and become entrapped and suffocate or strangle.

Consumers are urged to check their bassinets to ensure they are not using one of the recalled Simplicity bassinets.

Parents and caregivers are advised to return these bassinets to the retail store where they were purchased. All of the recalled bassinets can pose a danger to infants.

To determine whether your bassinet has been recalled, please check for the model number and the manufacture date code pictured below. Bassinets manufactured prior to 21st week of 2008, “2108” (before May 18) are recalled. The model numbers for recalled bassinets manufactured prior to “2108” are:

Due to the life-threatening hazard these bassinets pose to infants, CPSC urges all consumers to share this safety warning with friends, family, day care centers, and consignment stores to ensure that no child is placed to sleep in a Simplicity convertible bassinet covered by this warning.

CPSC is still interested in receiving incident or injury reports that are either directly related to this product recall or involve a different hazard with the same product. Reports can be sent by visiting https://www.cpsc.gov/cgibin/incident.aspx.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Evenflo Majestic™ High Chairs

Units: About 95,000

Manufacturer: Evenflo Company Inc., of Miamisburg, Ohio

Hazard: Plastic caps and metal screws on both sides of the high chair can loosen and fall out, posing both fall and choking hazards to children. Plastic caps and screws that become loose and fall out can cause the seatback to suddenly fall back or detach from the high chair. Children can fall out or collide with objects and suffer broken bones, abrasions, cuts and bruises. Detached plastic caps and metal screws also pose a choking hazard to children.

Incidents/Injuries: Evenflo has received 140 reports of seatbacks reclining, falling back and/or detaching unexpectedly, which resulted in at least 47 reports of bumps and bruises to the head, two reports of broken bones, and at least 45 reports of other injuries including abrasions, cuts, and bruises. Evenflo has received more than 1,000 reports of plastic caps and screws falling out of the high chairs, including seven incidents in which caps and screws were found in children’s hands or mouths but were removed before choking occurred.

For more information, including lot numbers and Evenflo contact information, click here.

Beco filed a voluntary recall yesterday with US Consumer Product Safety Commission for their product Beco Butterfly produced and sold during January thru February 2008. Same recall for EU will be filed next week.

Hazard: Buckles connecting top of carrier’s body with shoulder straps can suddenly release tension when shoulder straps held near by or by the buckles, causing carrier’s body to shift, posing a fall hazard to the baby.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 10 reports of the webbing slipping thru the shoulder buckles causing carrier’s body to shift. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recalled infant carriers were sold under brand name “Beco Baby Carrier Butterfly”. Carrier has black label with green logo “b” on left side and picture of butterfly on the right side.
Name of fabrics included in this recall: Mia, Pony Express, Carnival, Addison, Ethan, Sophia, Cameron, Ava, Joshua

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the carrier immediately and contact Beco Baby Carrier for instructions on returning the carriers for repair. Firm will provide free retrofit of the buckles and reimburse involved postage.

Beco is saying the information will be posted on their website by today and a hotline (800 number) by next week.

We wanted to get this information out as soon as we had word from it from the vendor.

Bottom line; “we recognized the potential hazard resulting from use of our product, will contact all customers who has purchased this product (via email and mail) and offer a free retrofit of the pieces with the new types of buckles, which will be standard use in our production as of March.
We will also reimburse customers for returning shipping and ship the products back for free as well”.

All Beco Butterfly carriers made after the recall are already retrofitted with they new parts. As of now, our inventory is being sent back to Beco, and we will receive the new shipment in April. We will be testing them under our conditions to make sure they are safe for our customers and then will decide if it’s a product we still wish to carry. This is a voluntary recall and no accidents have been reported. We loved this carrier for its innovative design and style. Let’s hope they can get it together and get the product back on track.

I’ll keep you posted with any further information. We are asking our customers to call Beco at 714-552-3201, or you can wait for their toll free number which will be out next week. We will not be able to accept returns here, Beco wants to have all of their products returned to them to fix the issue. However, if you have any questions about the carrier you have or if you should be using it, please call us at 401-234-1279.

Best, Shannon

Is anyone surprised about this? Basically, you shouldn’t put the Bumbo on an elevated surface. The CPSC says, “If the seat is placed on a table, countertop, chair, or other elevated surface, young children can arch their backs, flip out of the Bumbo seat, and fall onto the floor, posing a risk of serious head injuries.”

We sell tons of Bumbos in our center. Parents tell us it is the best thing since sliced bread. I couldn’t recall how many times I have recommended the Bumbo. However, we all need to use our noggins when it comes to our children and safety. Our children should never be unattended on any elevated surface, whether a changing table, kitchen counter or in a Bumbo. There is nothing actually wrong with the Bumbo, the product itself is fine. The recall is for a warning sticker to be put on the Bumbo to remind everyone to not leave your child unattened on any elevated surface.

Consumers can contact Bumbo International at (877) 932-8626 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. eastern time, Monday through Friday, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.bumbosafety.com.
