How Do Amber Teething Necklaces Work?

Monday, February 28th, 2011

First things, first:

Your child DOES NOT chew on the necklace!

We know, it’s a bit confusing considering it’s a teething necklace and they can’t even put it in their mouth. The comfort these stylish necklaces provide isn’t by way of a massage for achey gums. Their secret is in the magical powers of the amber beads.

Courtesy of the lovely online Encyclopedi Britannica and the ever enlightening Wikipedia:

Millions of years ago in the Oligocene epoch of the Earth’s history, clear resin seeped from pine trees growing in the Baltic Sea basin. As centuries passed, lumps of this resin were covered by layers of soil. The Ice Age glaciers poured over it. The resin was hardened by time and pressure into a fossil called amber.

Amber is even a bit of a celebrity having made quite the impression in none other than Jurassic Park. Yep, the little bug was frozen in time in a piece of amber.

The secret behind the soothing powers of amber is in the Succinic Acid. Amber contains some of the highest concentrations of it found in nature. It is a natural component of plant and animal tissues and it’s been known to have numerous beneficial effects when present in the human body, including pain relief. For centuries families in Europe and abroad have relied on amber teething necklaces to soothe their children’s teething discomfort.

When your child wears their amber teething necklace, their skin’s warmth will allow the amber to release trace amounts of natural oils containing Succinic Acid. Once absorbed into the skin, your child will begin reaping the healing benefits.

Here are a few common questions we get about amber teething necklaces:

How do I make sure my child does not put the necklace in their mouth?

The necklaces we carry come in a variety of sizes so you will select the length most appropriate for your child’s age. We also suggest parents supervise children while wearing these necklaces.

Can my child sleep in the necklace?

It is recommended to remove the necklace for sleep. Many parents will remove the necklace and wrap it around their child’s ankle through the night. Footed pajamas are the best option when using the necklace at night on your child’s ankle.

Does the color of the necklace matter?

The lighter the color of amber the more succinic acid it contains.  The lightest colors contain up to three times more than the darkest color. That being said, any amount of succinic acid is going to provide some level of pain relief so determine what color you opt for based on how much discomfort you find your child to be under.

What if my necklace should come undone?

Each amber bead is individually strung; the thread is knotted in between each bead. If your necklace should somehow come undone, you won’t have a mess of beads all over the place.

Have you used an amber teething necklace? We’d love to hear about your experience!

Toss It Around

Friday, February 25th, 2011

If you took one look at our inventory room, you’d think we’re getting ready to welcome Spring with a massive playdate in the park. The lovely folks over at Melissa and Doug have got us fully stocked with warm weather goodies. We’re convinced they’re trying to will away the cold just like we are.

Today we’re sharing with you one toy we think your little one will love. We tested it out in our classes this week and it was a smash hit!

The Melissa & Doug Verdie Chameleon Beanbag Toss comes with 8 beans bags, folds completely flat, has a velcro pocket for bean bag storage, is double sided for beginner and advanced play and is just plain cute. One side has eight numbered openings for use lying flat (see picture below) for the younger set working on mastering their over- and under-hand toss as well as their aim. For expert throwers, stand the game up vertically (see picture above) for more of a  challenge.

When we used it in class, the kids were so excited you would have thought it was a bottomless pit of ice cream! They loved the bean bags which are of the mini variety and perfect for small hands. With so many bean bags to go around, sharing wasn’t an issue and many were eager to make sure each of their friends had their own bean bag. The best part was having our little students discover they could also crawl through the tiny opening of the game. Once we got tossing, the kids didn’t want to stop!

This is a perfect toy for teaching your child how to toss and how to take turns with friends. Because it folds flat, you can store it easily in your home during the winter months for some active indoor play when you’re snowed in. Come sun and warm weather, set it up in the backyard for an easy playdate activity.

We can’t stop dreaming about warm weather! What will your first activity be once the warm weather arrives?

Step Out In Style This Spring With Rileyroos

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Being a store run by women, it’s an understatement to say we’ve got a little bit of a shoe fetish. We don’t discriminate either – shoes for us or shoes for our kids, we love shoes! So we were incredibly excited to welcome Rileyroos to our line up of shoes for little feet.

Rileyroos meet all of our high standards for shoes for growing feet:

  • stylish
  • a flexible sole
  • protective rubber bottom
  • sole curls over toes
  • did we mention incredibly stylish?

Rileyroos were created by parents who were frustrated with the shoes they were finding for their child. They couldn’t find stylish shoes which supported proper foot development. So they took it upon themselves to design the perfect shoes for babies and toddlers on the move! From their website:

“We designed the line to imitate barefoot walking and to protect little feet. The sole of a Rileyroos shoe is flexible and its rubber-padded sole curls above the toes to provide leverage as a child begins crawling. Unlike many heavy or bulky first walking shoes, Rileyroos’ lightweight construction and protective bottoms support a child’s foot as he or she starts walking and provides traction to prevent falls on slippery surfaces.”

We just have one little problem. We can’t decide which ones to bring home! Stop in today and take a look at all the fun Spring styles…but hurry shoes never last long in the store!
