Juggling Act

Monday, May 24th, 2010

If you’ve ever walked into the store and seen a lovely lady fashionably clad in great jewelry and with a killer smile, then you’ve had the pleasure of meeting Kelly – co-owner/founder, mom of three, Martha Stewart, breastfeeding advocate, empowered childbirth champion, do-it-all.  She always wears a smile despite how hectic her days become.  Here, Kelly has documented a day in her very fashionable and crazy life.

Wake up at 5:30 am to try and keep the number of awake children under two, because if one more wakes up it is really going to be a long day.

Shower, dress and feed several people.

Prepare lunches and then get in car (warning: you should love your car, lots of time will be spent there)

Enter carpool line, drop-off  your eight year old.

Park and go inside to pick up paperwork for PTA.  Chat with outgoing PTA president who no doubt wants you to volunteer for one or nine things.  (note: Yes I could have skipped one step by avoiding the carpool line but I can’t bring the child into the school because he is too cool for that and needs to be dropped off.)

Next stop: pediatrician for a well-visit.  You hear about statistics and development; and then console a weeping six year old because she wanted to be told that her eyes needed glasses.  Two out of the twelve children in her class have needed to get spectacles this last month, and she wants them, too.

Back to the car.  Drop off six year old.

Head into work with The Baby.  Work for a few hours, deal with questions, and products, phone calls and woes, and then…

Back to the car.

Pick up two children here, and then one there, and then off to one more stop for the day.

Come home.  Laundry, dishes, homework, cook.

Back to the car (do you see why you should like your car?).  Get the kids, the gear, the coats, the umbrellas, the seats, the drinks, snacks, money and keys all into the car in the rain.

Head to baseball diamond, cheer on your child and other people’s children with more intensity than you have ever summed up for a professional being paid 4.1 million dollars a year.  You watch your child be so incredibly proud of himself, and his body, for what it can do.  You see that amazing joy a team has when they have been modeled a life of sportsmanship and respect.

Back to the car, and when you get home, covered in dirt and rain, with frizzy hair, your little one, The Baby, sits down on the potty and <gasp> goes potty! You will cheer so loudly it will make her jump. After you tuck them all in that night you will sit down and write this blog post, because you hope, you pray that you will never forget this day and all of the amazement of it.

Thank you, Kelly, for doing all of the above and still being able to put a smile on each day for the wonderful customers of Bellani!

PS. When do you sleep?

How fast are you running?

People have been asking how my training is going. So here’s the update to my 5k coming up this fall.

istock_000007984930xsmallI run 4 – 5 days per week. I have been stressing about the fact that I still can’t run 2 miles on pavement (the treadmill is completely different).  With only 9 weeks left for training, which may sound like a lot to some, seems like tomorrow for me. I usually do between 3 and 4 miles at a time, varying between running and walking.

I have found that my recovery time has improved dramatically. That is, after I run 1 1/2 miles, I only have to walk for a minute or 2 before I can start to run again.  I honestly never thought I could run that far at one time.

This past weekend I decided to throw in a sprint workout. After all, that is what I used to do. How hard can it be? It is Tuesday morning and I am still incredibly sore. Seventeen years is a long time to go between workouts.  Sunday night at 7:15 pm I headed to Toll Gate HS to run on their track. I love the way it feels under my feet. Slightly bouncy, soft and easy to run on. I had my stop watch in hand and ready to go. As I was jogging a lap around the track to warm-up I was thinking how slow could I have gotten? Clearly I’m delusional. I’m just thankful no one else was there to hear me talking to myself. The words “How is that possible” kept coming out.

I now have two goals. One, my 5k in September (which I figured out a few weeks ago that we get back from Vegas two days before the race), and the second to improve my sprinting times.

Hello from Stacey B.

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Hello…My name is Stacey B. and I have been a Bellani Mom since taking prenatal yoga with baby #2. Someday I will tell you the story of how finding Bellani changed my pregnancy, and my parenting but that’s for another day. Today I want to focus on being High-Tech Mommy I want to start out with some numbers – 13, 9, and 2!

Thirteen – Not an unlucky number for me but rather the number of times I moved before I was 16 years old (no I was not part of a military family).  After my nomadic younger years, I have settled down to live in Rhode Island for the past 12 years because, well, I married a Rhode Islander and after living so many places I can honestly say this is the best place to live and raise children.

Nine – the number of years I have been married to my sweet husband, John. He’s a great guy and a wonderful dad.

Two – JT (5) and Zoe (20months) are the two kiddos in my life. I have quite the age span between the two so six months after JT got potty trained I started all over with an infant…what was I thinking? They both have unique personalities and its fun to see how different siblings can be.  040409_guertink_portraitsimple_36

Two – can also be the number of jobs I have since I work full time outside the home and am raising a family. I sometimes think I should change that number to 26 –since it feels like I am always juggling and trying to figure out how to make it work. My friend at work and I have a saying…”It’s always something!” We leave each other voicemails:
“Won’t be in today, two kids barfing because it’s always something!”
“Molly flushed her new glasses down the to
Iiet, because it’s always something!”
On a good week, there is one ot two “something” stories a week…on a bad week there’s “something” everyday! I
am not foolish enough to think I can balance both worlds because honestly I am not sure balance exists, some days are great and I think ‘I got this working mommy thing down’ other days are complete failures but I pick myself up and remember tomorrow is another day.

Around here I am going to be known as high-tech mommy, and while that doesn’t mean I can fix your computer it does mean I will spend some time talking about high tech things that make an  over-programmed Mom’s life easier. From photo storage, cell phones, planners, and buying online and of course high tech baby gear there is a lot out there for me share!
