The Little Things

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

boysviewSometimes we walk around each day and just try to get through it. Some days we forget to stop and think what makes our day better. Some days we can’t think of anything to be thankful for.

I try to stop each day and think about 3 “little” things that I am grateful to have in my life. This list that I have compiled is small but I can’t write forever, you would get bored :)

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

1. I am thankful for a perfect cup of coffee every morning. (You have to try Trader Joe’s pumpkin coffee)

2. I am thankful my youngest son doesn’t want to unwrap his arms from my neck before he goes to bed.

3. I am thankful for my oldest son saying each night “Goodnight Mom, I love you, have a good sleep”.

4. I am thankful that I was bestowed with the knowledge of how to make a good lasagna. Although I change it a bit now and add secret carrots, spinach and sweet potatoes. They boys love it and I use the recipe from one of my favorite cookbooks: Favorite Family Meals.

5. I am thankful for the GPS in my car. A good sense of directions was unfortunately not bestowed upon me.

6. I am thankful for a scrumptious glass of Shiraz or Merlot at the end of the day.

7. I am thankful for Andrea our Art Instructor for being so creative when my ideas have run out.

8. I am thankful for Carla our blogger, newsletter guru and child development instructor who always has the right words.

9. I am thinkful for Deb our Prenatal Yoga instructor who is always so positive and seems to have a peaceful glow around her.

10. I am thankful for Maryann for being so trustworthy, reliable and happy ALL the time.

11. I am thankful for Amanda who stepped in when we needed her.

12. I am thankful for my business partner & friend Kelly for having so many ideas and future thinking for Bellani.

13. And I am thankful for Bellani for so many reasons. Mostly for when I walk in the door each day and it feels like a second home.

Once you start writing your list, it’s certainly hard to stop.

Our Family Bed

Monday, November 9th, 2009

If you come visit our home, you will find a comfy two bedroom condo. One bedroom is set up as a playroom for our daughters and the other as our bedroom. You will not find a crib or toddler bed anywhere in sight. Why? Because our bedroom is literally our bedroom, as in our entire family’s bedroom! We’re a co-sleeping family.

For us co-sleeping, or having a family bed, has been a way of life since we became parents. It came naturally to us and fit in perfectly with our daughter’s needs for sleeping. When our newest little girl was on her way we made a decision to stick with what’s worked. So every night my husband, our toddler, myself and our 6 month old (in that order) pile into our lovely king sized bed. Our girls go down around 7pm and are up between 6am-7am; my husband and I go to bed later in the evening and everyone gets a good night’s sleep.

Co-sleeping isn’t exactly the topic to brag about. Many parents do it, whether it be all through the night or just part of the night, but it’s tough to find support. People can be very critical and really their criticism is just their not understanding 1- the logistics of how it works, 2- how it could possibly be comfortable and 3- how it could be good for a child. Some people say I’m brave to tell people so openly about our family bed but I do it for two reasons – first, because after having kids I could give a damn about other people’s opinions and second, I think people need to hear that it happens and that it’s normal.

Since we got our king sized bed I marvel at how we ever fit into a queen sized bed. The king sized bed is essential for comfort. As far as the benefits to our kids, I truly believe co-sleeping gives kids a sense of security and any kid can benefit from having a feeling of being safe. As for the logistics, there’s nothing that different from sleeping in a crib or toddler bed. Sure we had to figure out what order to sleep in but besides that it’s still swaddle, nurse and sleep.

I’ve never met a co-sleeper who judged “cribbers” harshly so hopefully by sharing my family bed experience folks will ease up on us co-sleepers. If I were prone to bumper stickers I’d plaster my car with ones that say, “3 Rules for parening: Do what works for your family, dont’ judge others and trust yourself.” Lengthy, I know, but that’s why I’m not in the bumper sticker writing business!

Do you practice some form of co-sleeping? How do you handle criticism? Hooray for co-sleepers!

Disclaimer: As with any sleeping arrangement, precautions should always be made so infants and toddlers are safe during sleep. Be sure to educate yourself on good co-sleeping practices. If you choose to use a crib or toddler bed, you should also educate yourself on the best practices for safe sleep in those situations.

Who ate all the brownies? Oh wait, that was me.

My oldest son is seven. He was home from school today. Fever, cough, headache to name a few. It was my day to stay home, I had a plan. First some resting on the couch with his favorite video (we still don’t have cable, only channels 2 – 23 and most of those are in another language or someone preaching about a higher power). Then we’ll write over due thank you letters (this was really more for me, but he didn’t know and it served two purposes). Third, we will build a huge lego tower that I had promised weeks ago. In the midst of all of this my son wanted to bake something. He walks over to the closet and pulls out the brownie mix. Brownies, I thought to myself, not too much of a mess, ok we’ll do it.

bbrownieI have to say I haven’t made brownies in awhile, but these were the best brownies in the world. Goowy on the inside, but the outer edges were still crisp. I’m not sure what we did to them other than actually follow the directions, but they were amazing. Unfortunatly my children aren’t the ones I can blame for the huge piece missing out of the dish. I have managed to eat 1/4 of this glutinous masterpiece ( I should probably bake more if I find these as amazing as I do). As I write this I have another piece sitting besides me. I just can’t stop tonight. Which makes me think of a big salad I need to have tomorrow. Which lead me to think about the Baby Food Making Workshop we are having with Whole Foods in Cranston on October 29th at 6:30 pm.

Everyone needs a little sweetness now and again. Knowing how to get heathly food into your children is priceless. Come join us at Whole Foods to learn new techniques and ways to incorporate multiple colors and flavors into their day.
