The secret life of real mommies…

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

When Shannon gave me a copy of Dirty Little Secrets from Otherwise Perfect Moms by Trisha Ashworth and Amy Nobile I thought to myself ‘I don’t have time to read books with words!’ but honestly it’s a collection of thoughts that will reassure you that you are not alone in the world of being a mommy. Speaking of reading, my son is now old enough to realize when I am skipping words in a story…drat!dirtysecretbook

Some more of my mommy secrets…
> I fed my daughter organic all natural preservative-free everything…now that she’s old enough to eat a hot dog all that has pretty much gone out the window…

> I reprimand my children for licking things off their plate/fingers…but I do the same thing when they aren’t looking.

> I blame the babysitter for eating the ice cream

> I told my son eating snap peas would help him learn how to snap (I would chalk this one up to parenting brillance personally!)

> When I need 5 minutes of sanity I pretend my boss is calling me on my blackberry…then I go upstairs and play brick breaker for 5 minutes. (I love brick breaker!!)

> When I am getting ready for work in the morning, everyone else in my house is still asleep -including my husband. Often the baby will wake up early and sometimes (just sometimes) I pretend I was drying my hair and make my husband wake up to get her.

I have more secrets to share but it’s time for my daughter’s nap. I plan on giving her a bottle, even though I told my husband I stopped giving her them a month ago.  Shhhhh!

Divorce would be Too Much Work

So I work on my marriage.  It isn’t easy, but it really isn’t that difficult either.  Mr. Guertin and I will be married seven years in December.  During this time we have had children, moved, started a new business, lost parents, lost jobs, and left jobs.  We’ve been lazy, and then at times we’ve seemed manic.

I’m a perfectionist, who has a to do list with several addendums.  I crave order, organization, and my idea of perfect family life.  Imagine living up to those standards!  My husband has his flaws, just like I have mine.  Sometime in the last several years I realized that a great marriage doesn’t just happen, I would have to work on it.  Quite frankly, getting divorced just seems like too much work anyway.

My Dirty Little Secret revealed…

Secrets. We all have them. The things we do when no one else is looking. The things we do to make life just a bit easier. Most secrets aren’t bad. Most secrets are things other people do, but never tell.

I think when someone reviles a secret that you can relate to, there is a certain sense of relief. The “thank goodness I am not the only person” washes over you. You feel like your ‘In the Club’ sort of speak. I honestly didn’t know where to begin with this post. What secret did I want to revel. Then I remembered…

I’m driving in my car, usually around 7:00pm or so which is bedtime for my boys and they are in the back seat. I can see they are getting sleepy. The glassy eyed stares out the window, the quietness of their breathing,  all the while I am thinking, please, oh please fall asleep in the car. I love bedtime actually. I love hearing my 6 year old read books, and the way my 4 year old smiles from ear to ear when you lay down with him. It’s the time Ethan actually tells me what has happened throughout his day. I usually say “How was your day” his response “good”, I say “What was fun about your day?” he says “nothing, we didn’t do anything.” That’s how it usually goes, until bedtime. After be both have read and the lights are off,  he will open up and really tell me what is going on in his life. I cherish those times.

…However, there are also the nights when all I want to do is finish up the last bit of my book, or just sit quietly outside. Those are the nights that I secretly wish, hope and pray that they fall asleep on our way home. I had that night tonight. After gymnastics and a quick bagel at Panera Bread, the car got quiet as the youngest drifted off to sleep. I would have been fine with that, but a few minutes later, my oldest had his head back and he was quickly off to sleep. I honestly was thinking how am I so LUCKY! Ahhh, the peacefulness of my house right now. I think I may be off to bed early too.
